Nail Ridges: What They Mean, What’s Normal, and When to Pay Attention

Nail ridges are lines or grooves that run either vertically or horizontally across the nail plate. They’re extremely common and, in most cases, completely harmless. Understanding the type of ridging you have—and what causes it—can help you better care for your nails and know when something may need further attention.

Types of Nail Ridges

Vertical Ridges (Longitudinal Ridges)

These run from the cuticle to the free edge and are the most common type of nail ridge. Vertical ridges often become more noticeable with age as cell turnover slows. They can also be more visible in dry or dehydrated nails.

Key facts:

  1. Generally considered normal
  2. Not usually a sign of underlying disease
  3. More noticeable in thin or dry nails

What helps: Regular cuticle oil, hydration, and gentle buffing (when done conservatively).

Horizontal Ridges (Beau’s Lines)

These run side to side across the nail and are less common. Horizontal ridges typically indicate a temporary disruption in nail growth at the matrix (where the nail forms).

Possible causes include:

  1. Illness or high fever
  2. Major physical or emotional stress
  3. Surgery or injury
  4. Certain medications
  5. Trauma to the nail matrix

Because nails grow slowly, these ridges often appear weeks or months after the triggering event and will gradually grow out over time.

Are Nail Ridges a Health Concern?

In most cases, nail ridges are cosmetic rather than medical. However, sudden changes, deep horizontal ridges on multiple nails, or ridging accompanied by discoloration, pain, or nail separation may warrant evaluation by a medical professional.

It’s also important to note that ridges alone are not typically caused by vitamin deficiencies, despite common myths. Over-supplementing without medical guidance is not recommended.

Can Nail Ridges Be Treated or Removed?

Ridges can’t be permanently “removed,” but their appearance can be minimized.

Supportive care options include:

  1. Daily cuticle oil to improve flexibility and hydration
  2. Gentle surface refinement by a trained professional
  3. Structured gel or smoothing base layers to create a more even appearance
  4. Avoiding aggressive buffing, which can thin the nail plate over time

Consistency is key—healthy nails grow out, they don’t heal overnight.
